Building Independence

Of course the goal of every consultant is to transfer our knowledge and expertise onto the parent.  So building independence is not just about the child with autism, but for the parents who will need to continue to guide their child for the years to come.

During the “Building Independence” phase, parents are able to demonstrate their sophisticated abilities in developing and recording engagements, and analyzing video data.  Parents generally feel a greater sense of hope and optimism for the future, and RDI typically becomes “internalized” in the parenting style.

What to expect during this time of building independence.

    • Parents may end enrollment from the RDI Learning Community if they wish.
    • You and the consultant evaluate level of support needed.  Usually support is more minimal during this phase as you are taking on more responsibility for your child’s learning.
    • You are encouraged to develop future child objectives.
    • The consultant begins to focus more on your level of analysis and decision making on future objectives as a way to guide the family toward transition.
